The Lodhas have purchased a Pablo Picasso painting, which will be loaned for display at their new luxury building
A new celebrity is taking up residence at Altamount Road in Mumbai - Pablo Picasso.
The Lodha family's new luxury building will be home to a Pablo Picasso painting - 'La Plage, Juan-les-Pins'.
The painting, which was earlier with a gallery in Paris, was purchased in a private sale from Christie's earlier this year for a confidential amount, and the entire process took over 18 months.
Abhishek Lodha, MD, Lodha Group, told ETPanache, "We decided on a Picasso because he is one of the world's most renowned artists. He has had a profound impact on art and culture in the 20th century." Lodha said they had looked at different artworks, a step towards starting their luxury art collection, before finalising on 'La Plage, Juan-les-Pins'. The aim was to "bring together the very best of art and sculpture from across the globe."
"We were keen to have masterpiece. We spent a lot of time seeking advice from art aficionados, attended auctions and held discussions with private galleries for this rare acquisition," he says. "I am thankful to all those who helped us in acquiring this masterpiece, especially Amin Jaffer [formerly with Christie's]."
The painting, which was completed in 1937, depicts the Mediterranean sea filled with contrasting bright reds, yellows, greens and blues, and with thick black brushstrokes. "Picasso painted 'La Plage, Juan-les-Pins' in the summer of 1937 at Mougins, a small town a few miles from Cannes. He would spend time at the beach at Juan-les-Pins with Dora Maar [photographer and painter] and other friends, including Paul Éluard [French poet] and his wife," said Lodha, adding that the iconic artwork will be displayed at the tea room of the South Mumbai luxe high-rise.
